The Serenaders

Serenaders

Following our very successful Summer Concert held on 20th July, we are very pleased to have raised £975 for the local branch of the charity “The National Coastwatch Institution”.

“National Coastwatch” is raising funds to set up a permanent watch station based in Ramsgate, to provide “The Eyes along the Coast” Since the government closed the majority of Coastguard Stations along the coast in 1994, the National Coastwatch has been raising funds for watch stations along the coasts in the UK.

Our nearest 24 hour manned Coastguard station is Dover, so it is essential that the service is continued along the Thanet Coastline. At the moment, there is a temporary watch station in Ramsgate and Coastwatch hope to raise enough funds to set up a permanent watch station in Ramsgate, followed by another in Broadstairs and Margate.

Coastwatch is run totally by volunteers and receive no financial assistance from the government.

The concert was very well supported and we are delighted to have raised this considerable sum of money, for a very worthy cause.

During the next few weeks the choir have several events arranged. In August and September we have been invited to sing for local care homes and in October for an Active Retired Club in Garlinge and in the same week, at the Poppy Concert which is being held in Birchington on 25th October to launch The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. We have several more events arranged between now and Christmas, when of course our very popular annual Christmas Carol Concert is to be held at St Philips Church in Palm Bay on Saturday 14th December at 2.30pm.

Ladies, if you can sing, and fancy being part of a friendly team that has raised thousands of pounds for charity, having fun whilst doing it, then please get in touch with our Musical Director Janice Regan on 01843 224027 or our publicity officer Chris Buffrey on 07711938373 email: [email protected] All you need is a love of music and an ability to sing in tune. Altos are particularly welcome.

Please come along to any of our rehearsals. We meet on a Monday evenings at 7.30pm at St. Philips Church in Palm Bay.

Kent Community Foundation

Windmill Community Garden Margate, based at Dane Valley, received funding of £4,642.00 from Kent Community Foundation in December 2023 for a community compost scheme.

This August, Kent Community Foundation visited the initiative to see how the funding has been used.

Now in its 20th year, Windmill Community Garden Margate comprises of two one-acre sites -a community garden and a market garden – that were transformed from derelict wasteland allotments after local families requested ‘somewhere safe to grow food with their children’.

The vision is to improve the physical and mental health, wellbeing, and community cohesion of garden visitors through educational and environmental activities, as well as offering access to locally grown, chemical-free food.

A volunteer with Windmill Community Garden Margate said: “Community composting is needed to preserve soil structure, which is rapidly depleted through conventional growing techniques. Making compost locally recycles nutrients from food waste, improves soil fertility, diverts tonnes of food waste from landfill, reduces methane emissions and mitigates global warming.”

The Windmill Community Garden Margate uses a food waste Ridan Composter which makes food growing more successful as mulching reduces the time spent watering and feeding produce with plant feeds. The composting project funding application asked for financial support towards running costs, adding additional composting bays, contributing to staffing costs and providing learning support materials for accessible learning.

Phoebe Pemberton, Team Leader at Windmill Community Garden, said:  “Our community garden is a truly magical place, featuring a community growing space, accessible pathway, forest garden, poly tunnel, kitchen, wildlife habitats and much more.

“Our market garden is a chemical-free food growing space that includes no-dig beds, an apiary, vegetable, herb, and edible flower beds which supply a weekly vegetable bag scheme, our market stall, and local restaurants all year round. We were delighted to show Kent Community Foundation around the Garden and explain that we have already produced 3000 litres of compost to mulch our plants.”

Hannah Hayfield, Communications Manager, Kent Community Foundation, added: “ It was a pleasure to visit Windmill Community Garden Margate and learn how our funding had supported their community composting service. This project has diverted food waste from landfill, reduced time watering and feeding plants and has helped to deliver a programme which shares the best practices and benefits of community composting.”

Kent Community Foundation awarded the funding for this project from funds that are ring fenced to support environmental schemes. There is also money set aside to support projects which benefit children, young people and families,  vulnerable adults, the elderly and isolated and employability, skills and enterprise.
