Mayor of Broadstairs and St Peter’s

The Mayor of Broadstairs & St. Peter’s, Cllr Mike Garner, has chosen to support the charity 21 Together as his Mayoral Charity for the Civic Year 2024-2025.

21 Together is a registered charity in Kent set up in 2016 by four parents each with a child with Down’s syndrome. It is now a vibrant and thriving community charity with families at the heart of everything they do, supporting children and young people with Down’s syndrome, their families and those that work with them.

Their ethos is “Everyone has the right to live their lives to the fullest of their potential. Our specialist services provide the tools for our community to realise that potential.”

Cllr Garner will aim to organise several fundraising and awareness events with 21 Together.

Cllr Garner says: “I attended the launch of the charity’s ‘Communicate Together’ project earlier in July which aims to enable a new centre to be set up in Thanet, and I want to do all I can to support them as Mayor.”

Julie Stichbury, Partnerships Manager for 21 Together said: “21 Together are delighted to be The Mayor of Broadstairs & St. Peter’s chosen charity of the year and we look forward to getting more involved with the community and making our services more accessible to the Down's syndrome community within Thanet.”

Isle of Thanet Photographic Society

Thanet’s camera club achieved a great result in the recent Ross Cup Competition organised by the Kent County Photographic Association (KCPA). 24 clubs from across the region took part with a total of 192 images entered.

The Isle of Thanet PS was placed 3rd with an overall score of 142 points. Top marked image from Thanet was Terry Scales’ “Fleet with Pike from Buttermere” (pictured above) which received 19 points.

The judge commented that this was a classic and gentle landscape image, with lots of detail. All elements held together well.

Malling PS won the competition with 147 points and Ashford PS were runners up with 144 points.

Thanet’s chairman, Andy Shaw, commented: “This was a great result for our club. We have some very talented and creative members who are constantly striving to improve their skills.

“These competitions attract strong entries from across the region so we are delighted to have come 3rd. We are now looking forward to our new season which begins on 5 September. Everyone is welcome to join us”

Meetings are held on Thursdays at 7.30pm, at the Portland Centre, St Peter’s, Broadstairs.

The 2024/25 season programme is on our website.

NCI Ramsgate currently operates from a temporary Lookout Station up on Winterstoke Gardens.

We desperately require some financial support to purchase and install a full sized and fully equipped Lookout Station.  We have identified a local company that manufacturers the exact type of structure we require, but obviously funds need to be raised.  We have endeavoured to carry out fundraising activities at various Thanet locations but public collections, whilst welcome, mainly finance our operational costs.

We have tremendous moral support from both Thanet District Council and Ramsgate Town Council, together with our partner organisations in Search and Rescue UK, HM Coastguard, Ramsgate RNLI and Border Force.

We have applied to many local and large companies, particularly building companies erecting large housing estates, for financial sponsorship to create a Lookout Station to thereby offer a greater degree of safety to those on, in, or near the sea, which is our motto.

Unfortunately, so far, we have received a totally negative result.

We are concerned with the school holidays now upon us that our role has become more exacting in that we have many young children going out to sea on various inflatable plastic animals, they and their parents, without knowledge of the hazards of the sea and rip tides which can very quickly take children out into the dangerous deep-water areas of the sea.

We are number 61 Lookout Station for NCI and with the encouragement of Thanet District Council and other organisations we have been requested to create similar Lookout Stations at Margate and Broadstairs, but they, as in Ramsgate, will require financial support.

Breast Cancer Now and Porchlight

Close friends Kerry Banks BEM from Deal and Katie Morrison from Solley’s Ice Cream in Ripple will be undertaking a gruelling trek through the jungles of Sumatra in September to raise vital funds for their chosen charities.

This trek is set as “Tough” and will test the friends physically, emotionally and mentally. The trek will be very hilly, and they will be trekking for around 7 hours per day for 5 days.

They will be carrying all their jungle gear on their backs throughout each day whilst battling the heat and humidity of the jungle.

The friends will be sleeping in a shelter with the rest of the group, in the jungle environment and attempting steep climbs and descents on muddy slopes, with the help of the occasional tree branch and ropes.

The climbs and descents are steep, slippery and should not be underestimated plus each day will require them to cross rivers.

The trek will start with a steep ascent from the riverbed to the top of the mountain ridge in the jungle before a steep descent back down to the riverbed, where they will be required to make several river crossings a day, to get to the next camp. The campground will be located close to the river where they will sleep under a tarp under the canopy of the jungle.

Kerry will be raising money for Breast Cancer Now – a charity very close to her heart that she has supported for over 18 years after her friend Julie Mortimer was diagnosed for the second time in 2006 and sadly passed away in 2010 aged just 41 years old. This will be Kerry’s 6th overseas challenge for the charity.

She says: “This will be by far the hardest challenge I have ever attempted. Being asthmatic, it would always be a huge challenge however when someone receives a diagnosis of Breast Cancer, they are facing a challenge much harder than this. I have a lot of positive mental attitude and am determined to raise as much as I can to make a difference in the lives of those affected by Breast Cancer. “

Katie is raising money for Porchlight, a local charity, who were founded to help people facing the devastating effects of homelessness. They also tackle the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality.

Porchlight help people who have nowhere to go and no-one to turn to. Some are homeless, others are struggling to cope with the pressures in their lives and need support to keep on track.

They provide children, young people and adults with the advice, guidance, and skills to live independently in the future, play an active role in their local community and fulfil their potential.

Katie says: “ This will be my first trek, and the furthest I have ever travelled. I can’t underestimate the mental and physical challenges ahead of me but also feel honoured to be able to support such a worthwhile and worthy cause. I have spent the past year training and raising as much money as I can in preparation for this epic journey of a lifetime. My bags are packed, walking boots at the ready and I’m ready to go!”
