Every student at Newlands Primary school in Ramsgate has been diligently working towards earning their prestigious Blue Peter Reading badge during this academic year.

The initiative was part of the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering a love of literature and encourage academic excellence.

Now, more than 100 children have been successful with achieving their Blue Peter Reading Badge and further applications are being processed.

The Blue Peter badge, awarded by the children’s television program Blue Peter, celebrates achievements in various areas, including reading. Children who have been awarded a badge can gain free entry into some 200 attractions up and down the country including theme parks, castles, zoos and museums.

Deputy headteacher, Debbie Farbrace said: “We are thrilled to see the excitement and dedication in our students as they have worked towards earning their Blue Peter badges through reading.

“This initiative has not only motivated them to improve their reading skills but also helps to instil a lifelong love of learning and literature. Every child has risen to the challenge and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.”

Students at Newlands have engaged in a variety of reading-related activities to earn their badges. Some of the notable projects include:

Reading Challenges: Participating in school-wide reading challenges, such as reading a set number of books each month.

Book Reviews: Writing and presenting book reviews to their peers and teachers.

Author Studies: Exploring the works of various authors and presenting their findings.

Reading Clubs: Joining book clubs to discuss and share insights on different genres and titles.

Teachers and staff at Newlands have been instrumental in guiding and supporting the students throughout this journey. Special reading hours, book fairs and author visits have been organised to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and find joy in reading.

As students continue to work towards their Blue Peter badges through reading, the school looks forward to celebrating their achievements in a special assembly next term. The event will not only honour their hard work but also inspire others to pursue their goals with determination and a love for reading.
