Fair Play trophy for St Gregory’s at Thanet schools rugby festival

Fair Play trophy winners from St Gregory's Primary

Fair play is the name of the game at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate – and to further underline their sporting ethos, the school won the prestigious Fair Play Trophy at the rugby festival for Thanet primary schools.

Now in its 27th year, the annual sporting feast was held at Thanet Wanderers Rugby club and organised by Thanet PasSport (Thanet Primary Association for School Sport).

St Gregory’s entered two teams, including the only all-girls team in the event. Each school was given a rugby-playing nation to represent and create an illustrative banner for; judges were out and about as the matches unfolded looking for the most sporting teams.

Head Teacher Dave Walker is proud of the school’s achievement. He said: “It wasn’t a tournament with outright winners but a festival that takes place every year and attracts 25 teams.

“Fair play is something we encourage in all aspects of our school community at St Gregory’s, from the sports field and in PE to the classroom and in our inter-personal relationships.

“The rugby festival is a lovely tournament and it showcases the enthusiasm, dedication and sheer joy our local schools have in playing rugby, and sports in general.

“We were privileged to once again be part of it, our teams were great ambassadors for St Gregory’s, and we endorsed our fair play ethos by being recognised as the best on the day.”

The event was sponsored as usual by Thanet Rotary Club, who provided a medal for every child who took part, and by MPG Properties, who paid for a trophy for every school.
