Upton team takes first place

Upton Juniors is celebrating after its Year 4 team won the Football Futures Schools Tournament in Whitstable. It is the first time any school from Thanet has been invited to enter the event for children in the Year 4 age group.

In the group stage Upton bagged 17 goals and conceded only one in seven matches.

After this impressive display the team dispatched St Peter’s, Canterbury, in a great match, resulting in a 4-0 victory.

In the semi-finals the opponents were from Lady Joanna in Ashford, with Upton winning 3-0.

The final against Herne Bay Junior School was a tight game – Herne Bay defended resolutely giving their opponents very few chances. The decider was a wonderful strike that saw Upton clinch victory and the title.

Callum Noble, Sports Coach and PE lead, said: “We are the only side from Thanet to compete in this tournament and it is thrilling that we brought the trophy home. Our team was up against quality opposition and there were some tough matches for us to navigate. Our win was thoroughly deserved and it is another sporting first for Upton.”
