Thanet performance company Looping The Loop, has hit its funding target to bring a Youth Theatre project to the isle.

Support from more than 100 backers, including contributions from Kent County Council (KCC), NHS Kent & Medway and The Smew Fund, means the scheme can now go ahead after raising just short of £12,000.

The Youth Theatre is set to begin on Tuesday 16 April, immediately following the Easter holiday and will run during term times on Tuesdays from 5pm for ages 7-11yrs and 6.30pm for 11-18yrs.

Hosted at the Tom Thumb Theatre in Cliftonville, the initiative offers an opportunity for young people aged 7-18 to explore performing arts in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Under the guidance of theatre-maker Brigitte Aphrodite, known for her vibrant blend of punk poetry and performance, participants are set to enjoy sessions that champion self-expression, confidence and communication skills.

Brigitte said: “This project is a fantastic opportunity to empower young minds through performance and to create a sense of belonging and self-worth.

“I believe art, theatre and creating is for everyone. Every child and young person deserves to experience the transformative power of creativity. I can’t wait to start working with them.”

Looping The Loop’s aim is to ensure the arts are accessible to everyone and sessions will be at a nominal cost of just £1.

Suzy Humphries, Looping the Loop’s executive director, said: “This milestone could not have been achieved without the unwavering support of our community, and the faith placed in us by KCC, NHS Kent & Medway and The Smew Fund.

“The contributions have brought this project to fruition, ensuring that the youth of Thanet have access to a creative outlet that has the chance to change a young person’s future,”
