Police are on the scene in Newington and several roads have been shut off.

Officers have closed Chichester Road, Lancaster Close, Kingston Close and Coppock Close this evening (February 20). Part of Newington Road was shut but is now believed to be clear.

A large police response, including unmarked vehicles and an armed response unit, left Margate police station at around 7.15pm for the operation in Ramsgate.

Residents trying to get into the roads say they have been turned back and told it is ‘not safe.’

Kent Police said due to the ongoing nature no more details could be released but confirmed: “We are in the area as part of a pre-planned operation.”

It has been confirmed this is connected to the search for a suspect following the robbery of Coral’s bookies yesterday.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police carried out a pre-planned search warrant at a property in the Newington Road area of Ramsgate, close to the junction with Stirling Way.

“The operation is being carried out in connection to an armed robbery at a shop in Newington Road, Ramsgate, on Wednesday (February 19).

“Armed officers are in attendance and enquiries at the scene are ongoing.”

More details are expected to be released tomorrow morning
