Armed police respond to report of man with gun in Westwood

Emergency services

Armed police were called to Westwood this morning (September 5) to reports of a man with a gun.

Armed officers responded and are still on the scene in the Westwood Road area – road at the rear of Tesco and running towards Asda and also up towards the shopping centre – but have not found the person described.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Kent Police received a report at 6.47am of a man seen possibly carrying a weapon in the Westwood Road area of Broadstairs. No threats were made and no reports of injuries have been received.

“Officers, including firearms officers, are attending the area to conduct enquiries, however no individuals matching the description of the man have been found.”

St George’s School remains open although shops in the Westwood area had been reported as being locked down. This has not been confirmed by police and most shops seem to be operating as normal. Tesco Extra was advised to shut down when the incident was reported but was reopened by 8am.

A message put out on social media by St George’s School says: “We have been aware of an incident near Westwood. The police have reassured us that there is no reason to be alarmed and the school sites are open as normal.”
