You’ve eaten it in cones, scoops and wafers but now is the time to try your ice cream rolled!
The Thai-inspired treat is currently on offer each Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays at Ro Ro’s ice cream – based at the Pegwell Bay Hotel play area – with plans for opening hours through the Summer holidays,
The new venture is run by Dean Smith and Bonny Drinkwater, from Ramsgate, and is named after their four-year-old daughter Roxie Rose.
It is made with liquid ice cream on a type of reverse hotplate which chills items and then the toppings are mashed in. Just as it begins to freeze, it’s spread into a thin layer, which is rolled up and added to a cup.
Dean, 34, and Bonny, 27, have a wide variety of toppings from the Italian Beverage Company’s Simply range and customers can pick what they want and watch as it is created.
The couple have started the new business alongside their current roles – Dean works for a scaffolding company and Bonny is a full-time university student.
Dean said: “We both decided to set Ro Ro’s up to work around us and create a future for our daughter Roxie. We wanted something to fit in to our way of life with Bonny being in university and Roxie soon going to school. As the summer holidays are coming up that will free up some time for us to concentrate on Ro Ro’s.”
Deans says the rolled ice cream and the luxury toppings make Ro Ro’s a unique offering for the area.
He added: “The customer chooses their own ice cream and they get to watch it come to life and can add from our choice of luxury toppings. It makes us very different and we have gone the extra mile to provide value for money.”
Choices include everything from Twix, After Eight and Amaretto crumb to raspberry or strawberries.
The couple hope to be able to expand the business by being at festivals and events as well as maybe doing private occasions such as weddings and christenings.
Dean added: “ I am also building a small trailer to add to the business so we can do two events at the same time. “
