A Margate church has a 9ft Tardis in its courtyard -and it will be open to the public

Bill Forrest has spent 6 months creating the Tardis

It’s not every church that can say they have a 9ft Tardis in the yard – but Union Church in Margate can boast just that.

The full-size time-travelling machine was created by church handyman Bill Forrest and includes a mini Tardis and planet decoration inside as well as that all essential Time Lord gadget -the telephone.

Craftsman Bill, 67, spent six months creating the work of art and says it is his “last hoorah” project for the church.

Art work for the inside has been created by Darren Main and Ian at Eyeball Signs has made the signage and polo shirts with Tardis logos.

Bill, who knows the entire list of Dr Who actor -yes, we asked- says his motivation behind the creation was “the challenge.”

The dad-of-two and grandad-of-one said: “There was enjoyment in making it. When you go out to make things for a job there is a time limit but with this I did the research to make sure all the proportions were right, sourced the materials and then had the challenge of making it.”

There will be a chance to buy the Tardis when it goes up for sale next year! Bill suggests the buyer keeps it indoors as it is not weather-proof. Enquiries to be made at the church.

The Tardis will also be available to explore during the community bazaar at the Union Crescent church on  October 27. The event, that runs from 10am to 1pm, will also include stalls with bric-a-brac, gifts, fashion, fruit and veg, cakes, a slime making stall, jewellery, Christmas sweets, homemade Christmas decorations and more.

There will be refreshments in the church’s Tardis Café, which often has Bill at the helm cooking for the Monday and Wednesday get together groups, and an official opening carried out by ward councillor Iris Johnston.

Union Church also holds a Friday coffee morning from 10am to noon where everyone is welcome to come along, make friends and find out about the numerous clubs at the venue including Tai Chi, badminton, chess and Guides and Brownies.

There are table for hire for anyone who would like to take part in the bazaar. For details call Karen on 01843 230131.
