Music venue and record shop plan for empty store in Margate

The store could become a music venue and record shop

A store in Margate’s The Centre that was last used by a vegetable seller and was previously part of Rosebury’s furnishing shop could now become a café with a record store and music venue.

An application has been made for change of use at 21-22 The Centre, next door to the rear of Poundland, by Alexander Barron of Monkey Boy Records.

The proposal is for the record store and drinks café on the ground floor with the music area in the basement.

The applicant says in his submission to Thanet council: “We hope that by bringing the property back to use (which has been vacant for many years) it will improve the appearance of the area, make it a more attractive area for shoppers to visit and help rejuvenate that end of the high street.”

Amplified music will be restricted to the back room of the basement and tests will be carried out to see if it needs further insulation.

The application also says security personnel will be brought in on busy nights to help with crowd control issues.

Thanet council validated the application on Monday (April 16). A decision is yet to be made.
