Shelters at the sea wall below the Winterstoke Gardens are getting a colourful make over thanks to students at East Kent College.
Youngsters studying level 3 art and design have been creating murals on the concrete shelters as part of a community scheme.
Art and design lecturer Dani Flowerdew said: “Our students do two community days every year, right across the college. The art students put forward designs for the shelters and are quite excited about the project.”
The community day scheduled for last month was rained off but Dani and the students were determined to start painting the murals.
So far, four of the eight shelters have been painted. The students will complete another one before October and the remaining three will be painted by a new cohort of students next year.
Dani said: “Lots of students have been working on this and they have just been amazing, even working during the half term. It’s a really good experience.”
The project first came to life through Mark Norton of the Creative Agency who set up a work experience scheme through a partnership with Friends of Ramsgate Seafront – represented by Andy King.
When last month’s community day fell through Dani was so determined to keep the project going that she built it into her college art curriculum.
Students on the painting and decorating course at East Kent College also spruced up the Rainbow Steps earlier this month and young people studying plumbing and electrics are due to carry out work on the Festival of Britain Fountain .
Volunteers from Ramsgate Town Team, town council and FORS are also involved in the project.
