Exploring, learning and friendship for newest pupils at St Gregory’s Primary

Young ones enjoying their first weeks at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate are showing plenty of enthusiasm and curiosity.

Their exciting learning adventure together has seen the Early Years children getting to know one another and discovering classroom routines as they settle in to their new world.

In Maths, the children have been exploring numbers through fun, practical activities, with a particular focus on subitising– recognising how many objects there are without needing to count them individually.

They are developing their understanding of numbers and quantities through games, songs and hands-on learning.

Phonics is also playing an important part in the first few weeks. The children have been taking part in lots of fun oracy games with Fred the frog, developing their listening skills and becoming more confident with sounds, and finding out how these sounds are represented by letters.

Their first topic work is ‘Marvellous Me’, giving them lots of opportunities to talk about themselves, their families and the things that make each of us special and unique.

One of their favourite activities is sharing their chatterboxes, which are filled with their special objects and things that are important to them. They enjoy talking about their treasures and listening to their friends share theirs.

Charlotte McDaid is Early Years and Key Stage 1 leader. She said: “We are so proud of how beautifully the children have settled into school life. They are showing such enthusiasm and curiosity, and their confidence is growing each day.

“They are already becoming a wonderful little community, building friendships, embracing our routines and showing us just how ready they are for their exciting learning journey ahead.”

Head Teacher Dave Walker added: “These are important weeks for our new children and for their families. Every effort is made to ensure a smooth transition into their new world and it is very apparent that this group is loving exploring, learning and enjoying becoming a firm part of our close-knit and supportive community.”
