An official three-month closure notice has been issued to the convenience store at Maman House in Cliftonville over the sale of ‘illegal cigarettes and tobacco.’
Thanet council says Community Safety officers had previously issued warnings to Maman House in Northdown Road for sale of the items.
On January 21, the authority’s closure order application was heard at Margate Magistrates’ Court and subsequently granted.
The order prohibits access to the premises by all persons, except the owner and anyone living at the site, for a period of three months.
Failure to comply with a Closure Order is an offence and persons upon summary conviction
Thanet council says: “Because the warnings were ignored, we applied for a formal Closure Notice. Margate Magistrate’s Court ordered the shop on Northdown Road to close; it will now stay shut until Wednesday 18 March.”
The notice applies only to the convenience store at the property and is not associated with any of the other businesses at the building.
That’s just a slap on the wrist for the offender and a slap in the face for all decent, honest traders.
I suspect ethnicity played apart in the decision.

But either the court or this story is wrong as the order granted 21 January for 3 months but can reopen 18 March. That doesn’t add up!
The notice is for a period not exceeding 3 months. TDC said 3 months but that is the date they have given, presumably they have the option to extend that until April but I’ll ask
