Following the Christmas Lights Switch On, the next big event of the Ramsgate Winter Festival is the Weekend of Wonder.
The theme this year is magic, joy and wonder with events across December 11-14
For more than 10 years Ramsgate boat owners have decorated their yachts to raise money for the RNLI, and visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the spectacle. This coming weekend is when they are at their most impressive.
There will also be late night shopping on Thursday 11 December in the town including a Pickle Pop-Up Christmas Market, a chance to spot the roaming iDeer by Jude Greenaway and entertainment from the Samba Ya Wantsum band.
There will also be the launch of the Light Up Ramsgate trail of light installations around the town centre, featuring a fantastic, pulsing, beating, Mechanical Heart by blacksmith Felicity Jones. Full trail map and artwork details on the website.
On 12 December there’s an Advent Doors special event at the Ramsgate Tunnels; as well as the launch of the Christmas Tree Festival at St George’s Church and the RLNI bringing Santa into the harbour by boat.
This is followed by “BYOB” – Bring Your Own Beamer, a night of DIY light and projections (donations on the door, with music and bar) at Arts In Ramsgate on December 13th. With a packed programme of more bands and music events at Slice, the Queens Head, Screaming Alley’s Alley Bar and The Pub across the weekend, keep an eye on the Festival socials or check out the website for all event details.
The Festival is being made possible thanks to core support from Ramsgate Town Council, the Canterbury Diocese via the ‘Project 200’ regeneration project at St George’s Church, and Vattenfall, marking 20 years of offshore wind farming in Thanet.
Additional support for specific events and installations has come from Social Enterprise Kent through the Boost programme and from Video Illusion through technical delivery.
The Festival is designed to be a celebration of the town that will grow into something uniquely Ramsgate by being co- created with the people that live and work here.
The co-producers are JH Events, led by creative producer, Jess Hudsley, Great British Carnival, led by carnival artist, Teresa Askew, and St George’s Church, led by the Regeneration Officer, artist Jemima Brown. Key partners include the Royal Yacht Club, Ramsgate artists and community groups.
