Little ones at St Nicholas at Wade CE Primary are getting on their bikes and riding for fun.
Children from Buttercup class are getting used to the basics of cycling thanks to a scheme run by Kent County Council.
The softly-softly approach is encouraging the young riders to explore pedal power in the school playground where they can gain confidence and share their new-found cycling skills with classmates as part of a supervised and structured programme.
Head Teacher Taralee Kennedy said: “The Balance Bikeability sessions were very popular and our youngest pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the special balance bikes with fantastic support from the wonderful team at KCC – Hazel, Oz and Sarah
“They have been encouraged in the saddle by learning how to safely get on and off the cycle and learning how to balance confidently.
“It can be daunting learning to ride your first bike, particularly when you see older children cycling around with such apparent ease. Everyone has to start somewhere and our little ones learned valuable skills including spatial-awareness and dynamic balance.
“They loved every moment spent in the saddle. They demonstrated such resilience and determination – by the end they all walked away with new-found confidence and resilience.
“We are glad to be part of this important initiative and were the only local school involved. The KCC team were patient and kind, helping the children get used to pedalling on their own as they introduced basic skills to make them confident safe riders with many years of happy cycling ahead for them.”
