In September 2023 Margate boxer Joseph Roswell was preparing to step into the ring at York Hall in Bethnal Green with the aim of taking his professional career to 4 wins.
The bout came after a long wait – Joseph had taken part in his first pro-match in 2020 but covid restrictions meant that although he continued training he did not have another match until early 2022.
There were then further setbacks due to waiting for the all clear from a head scan but the Ramsgate Boxing Club member was set to go.
But then Joseph was told there was an abnormality showing up on a brain scan which put a halt to the bout and led to almost two years of hospital trips.
Now, almost two years later, the 26-year-old is set to return to the York Hall for a night of professional bouts hosted by Goodwin Boxing on September 6.
The dad-of-one said: “It has been non-stop back and forth with medical issues. The brain scan came back with an abnormality and over the last two years there have been more scans and I have seen specialists and they have now signed me off as ok to box again.”
The issue has been an injury linked to head trauma which Joseph describes as a ‘split’ in the brain and he says he will still be monitored by medics.
The Trade Tyres worker said: “I have been ticking over to keep the vision. I made a promise to my nan before she passed away that I would carry on and that’s been my driving force.
“We found out two weeks ago (about the all-clear to box) and now I am training six days a week and cutting all the rubbish out of my diet. I am hoping we can fill (York Hall) out.”
Joseph has stepped up from super featherweight to lightweight, meaning he needs to weigh in with an extra kilo and is working hard with trainers Sammy Holloway and Liam Mckeown, who he has been boxing with since he was just nine.

Surely if you’ve already got a brain / head injury then surely ( pardon the pun) that it’s a no brainier to never step into the boxing ring again .

A sport(sic) where its main objective is to cause brain damage to those taking part, Duuurh! If they end up in a vegative state, the care cost will no doubt come from the our taxes, again Duurh!
