The volunteer crew from Ramsgate RNLI were paged by HM Coastguard on Monday night (July 14) to attend a yacht with engine failure.
The sea state was moderate but, although visibility was good, the wind was force 5-6 with a swell of 3-4 metres, meaning the yacht was rocking and heaving in the water.
A Pan Pan call had been made at 4.50pm by the crew of three onboard as they were having engine issues and all of the people were suffering from the debilitating effects of seasickness in the rolling seas, as well as fatigue.
Due to the ongoing weather conditions and wind direction it was decided that bringing the casualty back into Ramsgate was not practical and the best choice was to take the stricken vessel under tow and make way for Harwich.
Harwich RNLI were tasked with meeting the Ramsgate lifeboat north of the Inner Sunk Precautionary Area at the North Galloper cardinal mark where the crew passed the tow to the Severn class AWLB Albert Brown, who then towed the casualty back to the safety of Harwich.
Ramsgate’s volunteer crew then returned to Ramsgate mooring up at 11.45pm.
Ramsgate Lifeboat reserve Mechanic Clive Nicholls said: “ Sea conditions can change so when setting to sea always make sure you carry a means of communication and ensure the engine is regularly maintained.”
