Children at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate are all aboard the Primary Engineer programme that is working in conjunction with Southeastern Railway.
Pupils with a passion for trains and the design and making process are taking part in the challenge.
The brief for the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teams is to create a train model using a variety of Design and Technology techniques and equipment including a gent saw, chamfering wood and building a chassis. Scientific knowledge of circuits and pulleys is also included in the KS2 task.
The children will go on to attend a celebration event this summer to showcase their designs and take part in a competition to test out their models and see how closely they meet the required brief.
St Gregory’s DT lead Shimona Sandwell said: “This is an amazing opportunity for our children. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their own working models, putting prior learning into action in such an engaging way.”
Science lead Leah Campbell agreed. She added: “We want our children to visualise themselves in careers such as engineering and design and to recognise that all aspirations are possible.
“We are so grateful to Primary Engineer and Southeastern Railway for funding this challenge and for providing equipment and resources. A massive thank you also goes to Jamie from Southeastern, who came into school and supported our children in this process as our project expert.”
