The Works in Margate High Street will close in June.
The discount store, which sells books, art and craft materials, gifts, toys, games and stationery, employs seven staff.
The business will shut from June 8.
A spokesperson for The Works said: “As part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio, we will be closing our Margate store on Sunday 8th June.
“We have loved being part of the local community and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure.
“Customers can continue to shop with us at our nearby stores at Westwood Cross Shopping Centre and Ramsgate Garden Centre, or online at theworks.co.uk.”
The chain has around 500 stores across the UK and Ireland.
It is also understood that staff at Iceland in College Square have been notified of that store being closed from June 21.
Iceland is yet to issue a response to a press enquiry.

So much for Margate being “regenerated” by art, even The Works and Iceland can’t survive there!
The only place that got regenerated was the old town part, with all the arty shops run by the DFL’s & Dreamland by being associated with it. Town Centre, Cliftonville & the Seafront was left to further rot.
Bad news. Shop very useful for buying small to medium quantities of stationery. Perhaps many people have just given up reading and writing!
It survives in Westwood Cross, Dumpton garden centre, Herne Bay and Canterbury. Fact is, thanks to a combination of closed shops and anti-social behaviour, footfall in Margate is low.
SADLY I AGREE.
Doubt schoolkids & students have given up on notebooks, folders, drawing materials etc. This is a direct result of Labour’s attacks on employers.
Keith – that and reading being done on phones and Kindles or via Audible – and who needs to write letters and cards when you have JibJab (not in my house)
I sell more “proper” books than ever. Not everyone has dumbed down.

SHUT DOWN WESTWOOD CROSS-THATS WHAT KILLED THE TOWNS – TO BECOME GHOST TOWNS-WHILE WESTWOOD IS WITH ALL THE TRAFFIC ON THE ROADS AROUND IT LIKE BEING IN LIKE A LONDON RUSH HOUR-UTTER SHAME ON THIS COUNCIL -LABOUR AND THE TORIES.
I would revamp Westwood cross and build it like it should have been built in the first place.
Make it all inside, the wind that flies down the corridor of shops from the car park to ramsgate road is a ridiculous design.
But just like everything in Thanet it’s done on the cheap and not thought out correctly.
Much prefer lakeside, Trafford centre, blue water etc.
Westwood cross is all abit bitty, with shops over there, food places over the road, getting soaked going from one place to the other.
Westwood very over rated.
I hate stuffy indoor shopping centres, and much prefer Westwood Cross (though I’d like it better if there were pedestrian walkways connected the 4 segments).
FUNNY ENOUGH THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER-JUST ONE BIG SHOPPING MALL-WEATHER FRIENDLY.WITH ALL THE STORES INSIDE. SAINSBURYS TESCO THE RANGE – ALL THEM WITH PROPER ROADS GOING IN AND OUT.
This area could do with a high class stationary store.
Great news-Margate now has nowhere selling stationery-not including the laughable near empty token rack in the supermarkets, but if you want a cafe/coffee shop/restaurant there will be soon be three right around the corner in a small row of shops & about another 50 within a 30 minute walk in any direction you choose.
You will also have your choice of art gallery/hub-though sadly neither they nor the coffee shops sell Pritt Sticks or Sellotape.
This town is coming like a ghost town, all the shops are being closed down. Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town? Where you could buy stationery, diy supplies & pretty much anything else you needed, without having to go a to da next town?
It is no wonder when the rent is £27,500 pcm and why so much when the old Wilko unit in Ramsgate is £10,000 pcm
