Priory Infant School wanted to raise money for charity and decided to choose one that was relevant to its children and families.
The School Council spoke to their peers and asked parents if there were any charities special to them that could be supported. It was then that the school found out the Ronald McDonald House Charities had supported one of their families through a very challenging time in their lives.
Mason, a Year Two pupil, has a little sister named Madison who had been rushed to hospital in London after becoming very poorly.
The hospital that Mason’s sister was treated in was 77 miles away from their home so they were offered a place to stay at the London Evalina house. This meant that Mason’s family could be close by to Madison while she was recovering in hospital and did not need to travel back and forth during this difficult time.
Mason’s family stayed at the Evalina house for four months and thankfully Madison is much better now and is back home. Mason was very brave and shared his experience and understanding of the charity in an assembly for the whole school.
The children loved learning about the charity and the School Council could not wait to be involved in organising a fundraising event.
After hearing this story, Priory Infant School ran a ‘dress as your favourite character day’ to raise money to help families like Mason’s who are going through a difficult time in their lives. The Ronald McDonald charity donated prizes to the school so they could raise even more money through a raffle.
The children, staff and families of Priory raised an amazing £230.80. The charity says this money will pay for a family to stay in one of the houses for six nights.
A school spokesperson said: “We are so proud of all of the efforts from the children and parents at Priory Infant school. A special thank you to Mason’s family for sharing their story and raising awareness of this very special charity.”
Mason’s Mum, Danielle said: The Ronald McDonald charity gave us the opportunity for Mason to be able to come and stay and still bond a relationship with his sister and it gave us the opportunity also to be together as a family. The Ronald McDonald house gave you a little sense of home comforts.”

Much better than not running a much-needed resource for desperate parents! Ronald McDonald House is a long-running and well-established charity who fill a vital gap for parents of gravely ill children at hospitals in London. Whatever your politics, it’s a brilliant service. It’s not advertised on TV and they don’t use it in their marketing so I don’t think they’re using it in a bid to improve their image with the general public.
