Big Garden Bird Watch
24th January – 26th January, 11am to 3pm, Quex Gardens Birchington
Come along to Quex Gardens to participate in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch!
Bring your binoculars and see how many beautiful birds you can spot in the 10 acres of gardens.
Spotter sheets will be provided to help you identify the birds. Stop along the path for a warming cup of tea or coffee.
When you have finished, log on to the RSPB website and submit your results (this can also be done by post).
No booking is required, just come along!
Donations are gratefully accepted for entry, tea and coffee.
Off Season
A three day art festival kicks off in Margate from today (January 24} with a series of exhibitions and events.
The Off Season festival features more than 60 exhibitions and events for the weekend with some 150 artists showing work. Exhibitions will be taking place in every corner of Margate, in people’s homes, studios, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, a doughnut kiosk and even a car.
Between January 24-26, listings include an exhibition of queer portraiture created by this year’s Portrait Artist of the Year winner Brogan Bertie and Stef Felton at the Shakespeare pub.
Lindsey Mendick and Guy Oliver have organised January Blues, a one-off event at The Mulberry Tree pub.
The weekend coincides with the last days of Anya Gallacio’s survey exhibition at Turner Contemporary with a night of live music organised by Margate Radio.
More Margate galleries will be opening their doors, including Carl Freedman Gallery with Laura Footes, Quench Gallery with Delaine Le Bas and Catherine Chinatree, TKE Studios with Elissa Cray and Joline Kwakkenbos, Roland Ross with Morag Keil and Olga Pendan and 243 Luz with Shola Von Reinhold and The Eclectic Art Gallery in the Old Town- to name a few!

Come along to the Sunken Gardens for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.
There will be experts from Birdwise East Kent on hand to help you to identify the birds that you see and to share tips on how to attract birds to your own garden.
Every year hundreds of thousands of nature lovers take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring. RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, why not come along and help with this year’s count!
Mayor of Broadstairs & St Peter’s Charity Gig

Nosferatu plus Q&A

The Palace Cinema Broadstairs rounds off its’ four-month season of horror films with a special event – a chance to meet one of the industry pros behind the editing of the new spooky vampire tale, NOSFERATU (2024).
Receiving a warm welcome the Palace this Sunday 26 January at 3.45pm is Caroline Rowlands, who had a senior role as 1st Assistant Editor on NOSFERATU’s post-production team. Caroline will join the audience for a Q&A before the screening to share a look ‘behind the scenes’ at what went into making NOSFERATU the spine-chilling success it is, discussing what the job of a 1st Asst Editor involves, how the team collaborates, and how long it can take for the edit of a feature film to go from first assembly to final cut.
As well as NOSFERATU, Caroline has been 1st Asst Editor on ASTEROID CITY (2023), THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR (2023) and for TV ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL (2012) for TV. She is also a Visual Effects Editor and has worked on films including THE FRENCH DISPATCH (20121), ASSASSIN’S CREED (2016) and ANT-MAN (2015).
This event is the finale of the Palace’s horror season, ‘Broadscares’, which began in October 2024. Offering everything from surreal psychological menace to cheery musical underworlds to classic folk horror to deeply creepy things that go bump in the night, it has included 13 feature films from the original silent NOSFERATU (1922) with live piano, the latest body horror in THE SUBSTANCE (2024) and from 1957 classic NIGHT OF THE DEMON to brand new documentary TRIPPING THE DARK FANTASTIC about legendary horror film composer Simon Boswell.
