Ramsgate Festival of Sound

Ramsgate Festival of Sound continues with a packed line up of artists, performances and installations from now until August 25.

Friday night will take attendees underground into Ramsgate’s iconic wartime Tunnels for  ‘Water Holds Me Like a Lover’ a very special vocal and visual event curated by composer Donna McKevitt and filmmaker Susan Thomson.

Saturday features the annual free family day at Ellington Park with fun workshops by This Bean Spins, Katie McGarry, Taiko Dunlopo and more.

Live music begins at 5pm with Wyatt Riot followed by some lover’s rock music courtesy of DJ Front to Back before he hands over to the cosmic headliners The Future Psychedelics the Future presenting The Liquid Love Chronicles. Dressing up is encouraged – the theme is ‘Underwater, Outer Space’.

Busk at Dusk is back on the East Cliff promenade on Sunday night with music taking place in the shelters and on the festival stage. Pie Factory Music will curate the main stage from 5pm, followed by a great new line up of buskers from 6pm-8pm before gypsy jazz duo Lost Revellers open for Sunday’s headlining act, the infectiously fun Gemma Rogers and band for a triumphant festival finale.

Festival favourite, the Sonic Trail, is open Thursday to Sunday with six sound installations around the town centre and harbour, all free to attend.

‘No-Road Trip USA’: photography exhibition by Marianne Dissard

HOLD Creative Spaces, Penstone House, Albert Street, Ramsgate

Now until Sunday 25th August, noon -5pm, free entry

Franco-American photographer Marianne Dissard is back in Ramsgate once again to premiere her new photographic series. The dates for her solo exhibition at HOLD Creative Spaces on Albert Street coincide with those of the 2024 edition of the Ramsgate Festival of Sound.

The ex-Ramsgate resident (2017- 2022), now based in Glasgow, is back with ‘No-Road Trip USA’, her third major photographic series in four years after ˋHands, Faces, Ramsgate: The Year Christmas Was Cancelled’  (installed in Ramsgate Port in summer 2021 during Ramsgate Festival of Sound and locally known as ˋThe Fence ́ for its location on Military Road) and ˋLights Out Knightsbridge ́ (exhibited on empty storefronts of Ramsgate’s High Street and at HOLD Albert Street for the 2023 Ramsgate Festival of Sound).

Dissard, a singer and performer with a background in documentary filmmaking, began photographing in 2020 in Ramsgate when her touring was cancelled by the pandemic. She has since published two books and exhibited in solo shows in Ramsgate, Glasgow (twice), Edinburgh, and Paris, and in group shows in Edinburgh and Margate (Turner Contemporary). Her photography also features prominently in her current touring visual theatre production ‘Souvenir of England’ commissioned by Volkstheater in Vienna. She regularly releases new music in collaboration with Raphael Mann, another ex-Ramsgate resident.

The title of the exhibition was taken from a diary entry written in German by De Caluwé’s great-grandfather, offering a self portrait of sorts, a description of himself that captured part of him.

A Big Sing -Free Breakfast: Community Singalong

A free singing session hosted by a celebrated composer and folk musician will take place in Margate on Sunday (August 25).

A Big Sing invites caterwaulers and would-be warblers along to Union Church to sing their hearts out in the company of friends.

Songs include one of the world’s most performed hymns, Amazing Grace, a Nigerian hymn and a song penned by global superstar, Bruce Springsteen.

Visitors will be in the very capable hands of Margate musicians Morag Butler and Hughie Gavin. Morag runs folk venue Rosslyn Court and has recently supported the Libertines at their Lido concert held earlier this year. As well as hosting a diverse range of musicians throughout the year she has just finished presenting and curating daily sessions at Broadstairs Folk Week.

As the founder of Margate Social Singing Choir Hughie Gavin is no stranger to group singing. An accomplished composer in his own right he also founded the Institute Collective which forms an ensemble of local artists. Vocals from the collective recently featured on the title track for the hit show, True Detective, which features Hollywood behemoth, Jodie Foster. The track, which Hughie also helped to arrange, was nominated for an Emmy.

Away from the bright lights of blockbuster TV and raucous rock stars the warm environs of Union Church will host Hughie on piano and Morag on guitar. She said: “Singing makes you happy! That’s a fact. It’s an alternative to a traditional Sunday service and is a greatway to relax, let off steam, meet new people and have fun – stand and watch, join in, the format is very relaxed.”

The event will include a free hot breakfast and is fully inclusive. It is part of Food for Thought’s monthly events at the church that aims to celebrate diversity, discuss faith and promote community cohesion.

Sunday, August 25 – 10.30am – noon at Union Church, Union Crescent, Margate, CT9 1NR
