2nd Birchington Guides mark 100th birthday

2nd Birchington Guides centenary celebration

Members of the 2nd Birchington Guides have celebrated the unit’s 100th birthday.

The milestone was marked on February 29th. The first meeting of 2nd Birchington Guides was 29th February 1924 in Albion Road, Birchington.

Guides leader Theresa Ireton said: “We had a good old fashioned birthday party, complete with birthday cake, balloons, bingo and karaoke using our new karaoke machine gifted by our friend Barbara Sturgeon.

“We iced biscuits, and used our fingerprints to sign a visual record of who was present at this moment in history.”

The Guide Association was first established in 1909 and soon young women began completing badges in sailing, aviation and home electrics. Later on, Girlguiding members were making important contributions to the First World War effort – growing food, acting as messengers for government organisations and working in hospitals, factories and soup kitchens.
