Upton Junior children blast off on space exploration project

Exploring the astrodome

Space exploration has been an out of this world learning experience for children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

The Year 5 crew blasted off on a voyage of discovery of the stars in a term-long themed curriculum adventure.

In a packed schedule they have investigated the historic first moon landings in 1969; space disasters, the planets and their orbits; the moon and why we have day and night; the impact of the works of astronomer Galileo; and the future of space travel.

Pupils became broadcasters when they presented their own news reports about moon landings using green screen technology to give them a realistic backdrop for their bulletins which they prepared and scripted.

A trip around the cosmos was an astral highlight when an astrodome landed in the sports hall, enabling the children to see clear and informative panoramic projections of constellations and where planets and stars are located in the galaxy.

An art workshop encouraged pupils to try out different pastels and shading techniques to create planets, while in English the space theme continued with a text called Cosmic.

Homework projects saw children create artwork models to illustrate the relationship between the planets, the sun, the moon and the earth.

Head of Year 5 Nikki Lewis said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about space and it has been fabulous watching their faces light up in awe and wonder with each new discovery.

“They have been inspired to create some truly outstanding homework projects and their enthusiasm for the topic has been undeniable.”

Head of School Darci Arthur added: “The space adventure is a perfect example of our thematic curriculum at work, embracing a variety of subject areas linked to a common thread. It is a strong holistic way of digging deep into a theme and enriches the way our children learn.”
