The area from Nayland to the Imperial is shut as are side roads including Eaton Road. Flats above businesses from Flamingo arcade to Wetherspoon and at Albert Terrace have been evacuated.

An Army bomb disposal team is at the scene. It’s understood an item, thought to be an unattended suitcase, was found by the beach. Controlled explosions have reportedly been carried out by the team.

The MoD has been contacted for further details.
