Canvey Island 4 Margate 1

Margate’s four-match unbeaten run came to an end with a heavy defeat at Canvey Island in the Isthmian League on Saturday.

The visitors announced the same starting XI as at Folkestone in the FA Cup victory in midweek.

Early on there was an escape for Margate when Luke Deslandes’ shot was cleared off the line by Archie Johnson.

On the half hour Canvey took the lead with a Rob Girdlestone header following a corner.

Just before half time, the ball broke to Canvey’s Evans Kouassi in the box but Harrison Hatfull did enough to challenge him and see his effort go off target.

The second half brought a flurry of goals. It was 2-0 on 55 minutes when Kouassi played in Bradley Sach who finished low past Margate keeper Harry Seaden.

A third goal quickly followed when a free kick was swung into the Margate box and Sam Mvemba at the far post shot low into the net.

Margate did pull a goal back on 64 minutes through Fyn Rutherford but there never looked like being a revival by the visitors and a fourth Canvey score from Elliott Ronto followed in the closing minutes.

Late on, Antonis Vasiliou smacked the post with a volley as Margate sought to make the scoreline more respectable.
