Explore Thanet’s chalk rocky shore for its fascinating rockpool wildlife. Join one of the series of safaris touring different Thanet Coast bays to explore the chalk reef and rockpools to see what shore life can find. These events are run with the help of Thanet Coast volunteers.

All events last for up to 2 hours and are suitable for ALL the family, but particularly 4-11s.

Children must be always be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Westgate Art and Craft Group Summer Exhibition

August 21-29, St Saviour’s Church, West Bay Avenue, Westgate

Mon-Thurs 10am-4pm, Fri 1pm-4pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 1pm-4pm, BH Mon and Tues 10am-4pm.

There will be paintings, cards, embroidery, knitted items, jewellery, crafted Christmas decorations, etc. Cash payment only. Members of the group will be attending each session, so we will be available to answer questions.

It is a group of amateur local artist and crafters, with mixed abilities and styles who get together every Tuesday afternoon 2pm – 4pm at Westgate Community Centre, Lymington Road. There is no tuition, but occasionally the group invites professionals to give workshops..

Prospective members can come and see what the group does and join in, the first 3 weeks are free of charge. Members pay small weekly fees and an annual subscription.

On Saturday 26th August the Church will also have a display of booklets and information about the Westgate Heritage Centre.

Broadstairs Water Gala

The rescheduled Broadstairs Water Gala take place this Wednesday (August 23).

Enjoy everything from the Teddy Bear’s Picnic at Lillyputt Mini Golf, paddleboard lessons, Seashore Safaris, Punch & Judy, King Neptune’s arrival, decorated beach huts, sandcastle competitions, RNLI, beach sports activities, sea shanties, storytelling and lots more.

There will be a full programme at the Bandstand with singers, character actors, circus skills, performing arts and theatre.

The fun fair will be on Victoria Gardens from 10am until late and there will be a variety of local craft and gift stalls along the Prom.

In the evening there will be live music on the Bandstand at 8pm from Ozzie and the Uglies and a firework display at 9.45pm – weather permitting.

Ramsgate Festival of Sound

Ramsgate Festival of Sound will have performances and installations from 23rd – 28th August.

From internationally renowned artists to grassroots acts, theatrical spectaculars to captivating art work, there will be something for everyone.

As part of the festival  Arts in Ramsgate and Louis Palfrey will be hosting workshops looking at what regeneration means for Ramsgate.

Ramsgate Reconnects will comprise of free workshops on Friday 25th August, 1pm-4pm and Bank Holiday Monday 28th August, 1pm-4pm

A map will be created with the help of composer, sonic artist and neurodivergent advocate Louis Palfrey. The temporary installation will use electrically conductive paint – which consists of a conductive pigment such as silver, copper, nickel, or various forms of carbon.

In Ellington Park, an eclectic mix of exciting free events will take place throughout the day on Saturday 26th August with a children’s extravaganza, combining fun mix of live acts, workshops and DJs for all ages. Part of the fun will be with Baby Sensory Thanet and Toddler Sense Thanet providing activities for babies and young children from 11am-12.30pm.

At Ellington Park in the afternoon, expect show tunes galore from Hear the People Sing, featuring performances of renowned West End musical numbers by Stage Door Academy and hosted by Katie McGarry, plus Gaddzukes and Thanet Vocal Collective.

In the evening a much-anticipated performance – Screaming Alley Cabaret presents: La Isla Thaneta, featuring MC Jonny Woo – a raucous tribute to the undisputed queen of pop, Madonna.

Music headliner for the festival is Grammy Award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan, who will be appearing at St George’s church on Thursday 24th August for a special solo performance. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

Thess concerts raise funds for the Thanet Male Voice Choir, and are the only ones they do to raise money for themselves.

All of their other concerts raise money for local and national charities.

Pierremont Hall’s Summer Theatre in the Park is back by popular demand! Varying from family fun shows to innocent adults only fun, there is something for everyone!

Returning to us on Wednesday 9th & 23rd August are Pirates Pepsi & Shandy, and Coral the mermaid as they face a new villain – The Plastic Peril, who is threatening to ruin our lovely seaside with her evil plastic pollution!

Seats are available on a first come first serve basis, and we encourage you to bring a picnic & blanket! There will be a bar on site selling refreshments at each show, and we encourage fancy dress too! Come and join us for our FREE Summer Theatre in the park.

If the weather is bad, the event will be moved inside and we can only allow a limited number of people.

The White Cliffs of Kingsgate: Evolution of a Kentish Coastal Landscape

A chance to join Richard Hubbard on a walk to explore the geology, fossils, spectacular coastal erosion and history of the Kingsgate coastline, Broadstairs.

Take a step back in time as we uncover the secrets of this beautiful and important coastal landscape. The walk is based on Richard’s new book and will involve a walk and talk along the cliff top and beach.

These walks are suitable for adults (& over 11 years of age) and involve walking on the beach and rocky chalk shore.

The whole tour lasts 2 hours.

Story time and activities at The Classroom Westgate

Sandra Art4All Summer show

Sandra Art4All Art Studio presents 12 local artists with a varied range of abilities and learning impairments who are exhibiting their artwork in the Proud 2 Create annual summer exhibition at The Margate School.

Among those exhibiting are five artists selected to be part of the Portfolio Exhibition 2023 at Turner Contemporary in Margate and one artist selected for the Royal Academy London’s Young Artist Summer Show 2023.

There are more than 100 paintings on display, created by artists whose ages range from 13-52 years old. The Sandra Art4All artists are inspired by a wide range of themes, from landscapes to urban environments, and from animals to abstracts, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The exhibition is at The Margate School in Margate High Street from 17th-30th August, open from 11am – 4pm.

This exhibition aims to raise awareness of the features and coast of the North East Kent Marine Protected Area (NEKMPA).

Monkton Nature Reserve

Join Monkton Nature Reserve for activities for all the family including making homes for worms, exploring the pond, creating solar ovens and much more.

Sessions are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 11am and 1pm throughout August.

Prices per child are £3 members and £5 non members which includes entrance to the reserve.

There are also free moth trap mornings included with reserve entrance fee on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10.15am in the education garden.

Monkton Nature Reserve is a unique environment for British flora and fauna that thrive on chalk-based habitats. It is a charity managed by The Thanet Countryside Trust.

Lost Island

Golf and interactive darts at Flamingo Arcade, Margate seafront

From aiming your darts at the board to make a virtual ‘wall’ tumble down or to bag a collection of gold coins to testing your Robin Hood arrow skills – interactive boards at Lost Island Golf in Margate are putting a whole new slant on the game.

Three digital augmented reality dartboards have been installed upstairs at the Flamingo Arcade in Marine Terrace, alongside the venue’s second jungle-themed crazy golf course and a drinks cafe for players.

In augmented reality darts, players throw physical darts at a physical dartboard, but also experience interactive visuals, game statistics, virtual targets, animations, and scoring indicators superimposed onto the dartboard through projected high resolution graphics.

The new crazy golf challenge is another 18 hole course, with a lucky 19th hole. You can either book online or turn up and play. Golf opening times are 10am daily, with last entry 7:30pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30pm Friday to Sunday.

The boards are available to be booked for 1 hour slots from noon daily, closing 8pm Monday to Thursday, and 9pm Friday to Sunday. Boards can be booked for a flat hourly fee for up to 6 players.

Off peak board fees per hour are £25 all day Monday to Thursday, and up till 5pm Fridays. Peak time £35 per hour Friday from 6pm and weekends.

Margate Caves

The Caves were originally dug as a chalk quarry in the 17th and 18th centuries and are 94.2m long and 12.2m tall at the highest point. Originally opened to the public in 1863, the Margate Caves re-opened for the next generation of explorers on Thursday 22nd August 2019.

After visiting the Caves, browse the gift shop and stop off at the community café, popular locally for selling a range of delicious dishes.

The Cafe is open 10am to 4.30pm on the same days as the Caves.

The Spitfire and Hurricane Museum at Manston

Museum site, displaying the two iconic war planes, and also holding a host of objects and artefacts telling the story of life in and around Ramsgate during WWII. Central to the display are the iconic Spitfire Mk XVI and Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc.

As well as the collection, the Museum has a small shop and the café (open 7 days a week from May 18th) serves teas, coffees and quality hot food, with an outside seating area.

Visitors are welcome to sit on the benches in the Allied Crew Memorial Garden to relax and reflect, in an evocative atmosphere.

Shell Grotto

Grotto Hill, Margate

Discovered in 1835, Margate’s Shell Grotto is an astonishing find; 70ft (21 metres) of winding passages decorated with 4.6 million shells.

The walls are covered in images of gods and goddesses, trees of life and patterns made from the shells of whelks, mussels and oysters.

Some think it is an ancient Pagan grotto, others that it is simply an ornate Regency folly; but with no definitive explanation or history, the Shell Grotto is Kent’s greatest mystery.

Dickens House Museum

Celebrating Charles Dickens’ long connection with Broadstairs (1837-1851). It is housed in the cottage that was Charles Dickens’ inspiration for the home of Betsey Trotwood in David Copperfield. According to the reminiscences of Charles Dickens son Charley, they regularly had tea there with Miss Mary Pearson Strong, and her belief of her right to stop the passage of donkeys in front of her cottage became the donkey incident for the character of Betsey Trotwood.

Crampton Tower Museum

Crampton Tower Museum, on The Broadway, is a fascinating small museum, partly housed in a flint tower adjacent to the Broadstairs Railway Station. The tower formed part of Broadstairs’ first public water supply.

Ramsgate Tunnels

Ramsgate’s Tunnels tours take you deep underground to unlock the story of a hidden city, which evolved from the largest and only known Civilian Deep Shelter Air Raid Precaution scheme authorised by Central Government.

The military story is told elsewhere, but very little remains of the civilian story of a front line town under some of the heaviest aerial bombing in Britain.
