This is a 14+ event. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult (18+).

The Human League: a band best known for a song they never wanted to release as a single but that went on to become the biggest seller of 1981. “Don’t You Want Me”, a clever duet examining the death of a love affair from both perspectives, also proved once and for all that the best Christmas number ones aren’t about Christmas at all.

Over forty years later, The Human League continue to make and share the best of electronic music, their songs stirring up memories but, unlike some of the 80s nostalgia tours doing the rounds, without being tarnished by retro cheesiness.

Sound Arts events at TMS

Coming up this week are Antiphone – a late afternoon and evening of Sonic Exploration with a Listening Post, Sonic Walk and Sonic workshop devised by the Sound Arts students of The Margate School, which will take place at 101 Social on Saturday 22 July.

Antiphone : The Margate School Sound Group

Saturday 22 July from 4pm

At 101 Social, 101 Northdown Road, Margate CT9 2QY

In 2022 The Margate School established a new Sound Arts Diploma course, Sound Society Nature, led by Dr Dan Scott and Robert Stillman. The aim of the course is to develop students’ critical thinking around the nature and production of sound with an emphasis on experimental and experiential approaches to both sound construction and deconstruction.

Antiphone captures some of the activities that have been undertaken during the year, alongside an opportunity to participate in a collaborative  sound event or just to listen in.

4pm to 6 pm Listening Posts. These listening posts provide an opportunity to listen to some of the work that has been created over the past year. This includes a sound walk, various free improvisations, 3 radio pieces, a previous performance piece and a prepared piano piece that has been cut to vinyl. Listeners will be able to listen in to all or some of these pieces using headphones provided. A CD of the year’s work is also available to purchase.

6pm to 6.30 pm Sound Walk. Sound walks focus on listening to the environment as one passes through in a mindful manner. In this sound walk you are invited for a  walk through Cliftonville starting at 101 Social.

7pm Sonic Workshop. This part of the evening provides an opportunity to participate and/or be part of the audience for an experiment in improvised sound construction, where each sound source has the opportunity to exist and respond to other sounds (antiphone).  Instruments and sound sources will be provided, but please feel free to bring your favourite sound making object(s). The performance will be a continuous piece starting at 7pm and ending around 9pm and participants are free to join in and leave at any point.
