Medal winning swimmers from St George's School

Five students from St George’s Church of England School in Broadstairs have just competed in the third Summer Open Championships for the English Schools Swimming Association in Crawley.

Swimmers from across the country participated in the two -day event, which was open to all school age swimmers and para swimmers – attracting entries from as far afield as York, Devon and Lincolnshire.

Evie Potticary, 14, Evelyn May ,12, William West,12, Reuben Smith, 12, and Joe Davies,12, competed in 28 races, gaining an impressive 8 medals, including two golds for William West.

All five swimmers are members of Thanet Swim Club and regularly compete in galas throughout the south-east, training for up to 17 hours per week. They welcomed the opportunity to represent their school, with Reuben attributing their success “to giving training 100% at all times and supporting each other in every race.”

St George’s School headteacher, Adam Mirams, said: “ This was the first gala for our newly formed swimming team, and we are extremely proud of what they achieved.

“Being the only school from Thanet at the event and competing against far more established swimming teams from all over the country, it’s testament to the students drive, work ethic and team spirit that they did so well.

“A huge thank you to the parents for their support and we look forward to more success in the pool in the future.”
