The Classroom book shop in Westgate scoops Muddy Stilettos award

The Classroom story session with Adam Taylor

A Westgate business has scooped a Muddy Stilettos regional award and will go forward to the national finals.

The Classroom in Station Road took the title of Best Bookshop after receiving the most public votes.

The education business opened at the Westgate site in November 2016 and offered maths, English and 11+ tuition.

In February 2017 Adam began selling educational books. However, the venue then had a complete revamp and reopened on July 5 with its fully fledged bookshop. Teaching moved online due to the pandemic and continues.

Dad-of-two Adam, who has a background in teaching, is passionate about making sure children have access to books. In February this year he gave out more than 6,300 free books at 21 Thanet and Canterbury schools to mark World Book Day.

Adam said: “It was great just being nominated. Being in the final five was unexpected, but winning the Muddy Stiletto Award for the Best Bookshop in Kent is out of this world! “This is something not only our book shop needs right now, but Westgate high street needs too.

“Thank you, everyone, for supporting us by voting and sharing our stories. It truly is appreciated. It’s a win for us, our community and the children of Thanet.”

The Muddy Stilettos Awards have been running for 10 years and are the coveted awards for small independent businesses across 28 counties.

The national finals will be judged by the Muddy Stilettos editors and winners will be announced on 26 July.
