Model railway exhibition to be held at Ramsgate Tunnels

Model railway exhibition at Ramsgate Tunnels

Ramsgate’s Victorian railway tunnel will once again resound to the sound of trains this month, but not those leviathans of a bygone age that brought holiday makers down through the tunnel to Ramsgate’s sands.

This time they will be miniature replicas showing life in a small scale as proud model makers show off 12 intricate railway layouts in various scales and gauges, ranging from the American mid-west to a typical British Edwardian seaside pier.

If looking at all these model railways encourages you to have a go yourself then there will be two trade stands selling all manner of second-hand model railway equipment, and representatives from Sittingbourne & Kemsley Railway will be offering railway souvenir bits and pieces promoting their historic narrow-gauge railway.

Entrance to the exhibition in Ramsgate’s wartime tunnels is free and will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 24th  June. The famous ‘Tunnels Teas’ will be also open for cake and coffee.

There will also be a special railway tunnel tour allowing those taking part to follow the route of the much-missed Ramsgate Tunnel Railway as far as the blocked portal that once allowed the electric trains to reach Hereson Road. Tickets for the special railway tour and the normal explorer tours of the famous wartime air raid tunnels are available to book and buy from www.ramsgatetunnels.org
