Upton Junior’s fiery performance has won the first ever Dragons Cup relay tournament.

The inaugural event was hosted by and held at St George’s Primary in Broadstairs and it featured four-person teams across differing age groups each running two 400m legs of a relay around the two mile circuit.

In the Year 3 races, the Upton girls’ team finished as winners in a time of 13:05 with the Upton boys winning in 12:01.

The Year 5 Upton girls won their race in 12:45, with the Year 5 boys running the fastest race of the day to win in 11:19.

The Year 6 events were won by St George’s school in times of 12:05 and 12:08 respectively for the girls and boys teams.

Points were allocated for placing across the event and the Upton squad was declared the winners, with competitors from every school receiving commemorative medals.

Deputy Head of School Dave Walker said: ”The children ran really well throughout and, while exhausted at the end, enjoyed the competition enormously.”

*Upton School is organising and hosting two large cross-country events in June. The first, the Waterloo Relays, returns for the first time since the Covid pandemic, while the ever-popular Upton cross-country takes place again. All Thanet schools have been invited to send teams.

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Ramsgate Arts Primary and Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate.
