The open gardens event at St Nicholas-at-Wade is back

St Nicholas-at-Wade Open Gardens

We are very excited to announce St Nicholas at Wade Open Gardens 2023!

The event takes place on June 10-11 from 11am to 5pm.  £5 per person entry. Explore the gardens, Underground Chapel, craft fair, raffle.

In addition to the regular Open Gardens across the village, Chelsea Gold Medal winner Steve Edney from No Name Nursery in Sandwich will be selling plants on the Sunday, and the photography exhibition is by award-winning Nature and Flower Photographer Molly Hollman.

As always, we will be offering lunches and cream teas in the village – from the church’s brand new kitchen funded by the proceeds from events such as this!

After a 4-year hiatus, we are thrilled to be back. Proceeds go to Friends of St Nicholas-at-Wade Church.

Thanet Gang Show

Over the 6th to the 8th April, Thanet  Gang Show returned to the stage at The Village Hall, Birchington, where it all began in 1946. Since then we have played the Lido, The Granville, The Winter Gardens and until recently The Theatre Royal which was our home theatre for many years.

The show played to packed houses for each of the 4 shows, it included the Silent Monks Chorus (Hallelujah Chorus) a tribute to the Eurovision Nil Points, Back To The 20’s and an appearance by Greek Gods and Goddesses and the traditional Finale with Crest Of A Wave by Ralph Reader.

The Mayor of Margate was in attendance as was the Deputy Mayor of Broadstairs who enjoyed the show. The Cubs and Brownies made an appearance and delivered a excellent  section of Gang Show v Folklore. The ages of these young people is 8 years to 10 years and they gave it their all. The rest of the Gang were made up of Scouts, Guides, Explorer Scouts and seniors section Guides, with a sprinkling of adults from Scouts and Guide for good measure. This year, as in past years, we had a chosen charity, that was Macmillan Cancer Support. A cake sale,  Mothers Afternoon Tea and the 4 Show Raffles raised a grand total of £838.

We would like to thank everyone who support these fundraising efforts, we now start planning next year’s show. I personally would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s show, the cast, backstage and front of house, the audience  and Birchington Village Hall staff without them the show wouldn’t have been possible.

Westgate & Birchington Inner Wheel

Westgate & Birchington Inner Wheel is a member of the largest women’s voluntary service organisation in the world. Our objects are to promote true friendship, to encourage the ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding. Each year, our President chooses a charity to support, and we have fund-raising events throughout the year. We also enjoy informal social occasions such as coffee mornings, and we meet once a month for dinner at St Augustine’s, Westgate, and enjoy speakers, and other entertainment.’

Many of our members met up for ‘World Inner Wheel Day on January 10th to remember our founder, Margarette Golding, who started the first Inner Wheel club in Manchester in 1924. The 4 clubs in Thanet traditionally have met up in a member’s home for a coffee morning and a raffle with profits going to that year’s national charity,(in 2022/3 it is The Air Ambulance), and all members brought gifts of food and toiletries for the local food banks.

We welcomed a speaker from the Dogs’ Trust, to our January meeting, and we were delighted to induct a new member, Pam Turner, at our February meeting. One of our own members, Nursemin, gave us a talk about her job as a psychologist, specialising in drug and alcohol addiction.

Nursemin has recently run the ‘Deal Half-Marathon’ to raise money for the Westgate & Birchington Charity for 2022 to 23, which is Macmillan Cancer Care. To date she has raised £325.

We shall be holding a ‘Beatles’ Tribute night on 21st April at the Legion Club in Birchington, with all the proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Care.

Cliffsend Village is also asking people to help out over the weekend.

The plan is to participate in The Big Lunch on Sunday 7th May. It will be held in Marjorie Chapman meadow and people are asked to bring their  own chairs, tables, gazebos etc. BBQs will be allowed provided they are on legs. Organisers will also try and arrange something for kids. If you wish to dress in patriotic clothing then feel free to do so. The meadow will be decorated.

In the evening the plan is to live stream the concert from Windsor Castle. This will be held in the play area. Bring your own seats, blankets etc.

Anyone who wishes to help will be gratefully welcomed, especially if you have a decent PA system!
