A cheque has been presented to Newington Community Centre as Ramsgate Home Bargains staff work their first day at the new store.

The £2000 donation is to help towards the centre’s work which includes creative activities, Chill Club for young people, Food Club, and cooking sessions.

The doors of the new Home Bargains at the former Aldi site in Boundary Road opened at 8am today and it has been “exceptionally” busy, says store manager Casey Abbott.

Casey heads up the team of 39 staff, with 20 of those being new roles.

Casey joined Home Bargains in 2021 and he was awarded the British Empire Medal (B.E.M) for services to retail in June 2021 in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. This was due to his efforts during the pandemic while working for a food store chain to put in place a number of measures to help the community, including early opening with an hour for pensioners only.

A £1 million refurb has been carried out at the 15,209 sq. ft store.
