Young singers from Chilton Primary joined the world’s biggest youth choir for a spectacular show at London’s 02 arena.

The 15 pupils took part in this year’s Young Voices, a series of concerts around the UK in Manchester, Birmingham and London.

The Chilton team patiently rehearsed their programme of songs for the big day with teacher Poppy Winchcombe and were in fine voice joining in with thousands of other children from around the south.

They performed a pop medley from the film The Trolls, a disco party of numbers by Nile Rodgers from Chic, a number called Milligantics inspired by comedian Spike Milligan, plus numerous others including Just Around The River Bend, Go The Distance, Over the Hills, and Rock Star.

They sang along with music legend Heather Small from M People who performed the 1990s smash hit Moving On Up and she also sang Proud, the unofficial anthem of the London Olympics 2012.

Other stars who performed included violinist and composer Anna Phoebe and The Beatbox Collective.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “Our children enjoyed a fantastic time and were amazed by the number of children that attended.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience something completely different. Mrs Winchcombe has worked very hard with the children to learn all the songs.

“The children were so excited when they returned to school the next day and could not wait to tell us all about their big adventure.”

The Young Voices charity that runs the concert series states: “We believe passionately in inspiring the next generation to find their love for music.

“Children taking part in YV have the opportunity to perform in some of the world’s greatest arenas alongside incredible artists.

“To achieve this with all their school friends around them for support, it helps their self-belief, self-motivation, confidence, and ability to communicate as part of a team – which is invaluable.  Add to this the numerous health benefits of singing in rehearsals, including breathing exercises to focus the mind.”
