Appeal for witnesses to fatal crash on A256 Sandwich Road

Emergency services

Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash near Sandwich which claimed the life of a motorcyclist yesterday (July 22).

A blue motorcycle and a white Ford Transit van, travelling on the A256 Sandwich Road, were involved in a collision at 11.40am. The crash took place on the Thanet-bound carriageway.

The rider of the motorcycle, a man in his 40s, was confirmed dead at the scene and two other men received treatment in hospital.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for witnesses and would like to speak to a van driver who was reported to have left a layby and joined the Sandwich-bound carriageway at a similar time to the collision.

It is believed the driver will have important information which could assist with enquiries.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage, of either the collision or the vehicles just before the incident, should call the SCIU appeal line on 01622 798538 or email [email protected] quoting HW/LB/63/20.

  1. Rip
    Another accident that was preventable.
    Out driving today people speed.
    Or just don’t check mirrors
    Could be other reasons
Still that’s a tragic end so sorry

    • I feel the issue with that location is the two food vans in the rest areas. I am not blaming them directly however time and time again I have witnessed vehicles performing u-turns in and out of them instead of travelling down to the roundabouts at either end and returning. The owners of the vans are not responsible for this tragedy but have most probably seen what I have just mentioned myself. That short stretch should have bollards placed to prevent this or the entry/exit angles adjusted to prevent such manoeuvres. My thoughts go out to both the bikers family and the driver of the van involved. It’s a very horrible situation for all parties. I didn’t see the accident however the aftermath i saw while on the adjacent bridleway suggests this is sadly what occured yesterday. What happened can’t be changed now but a repeat can easily be avoided.

  2. Terrible crash on what should have been a lovely day out. Have ridden that straight stretch many a day. Sorry to lose a fellow biker just out for a ride.
