Police arrest 14-year-old over suspected car theft attempt in Margate

Arrested

A school-aged suspected car thief has been arrested and a screwdriver and balaclava seized by an officer on patrol in Margate.

A Kent Police officer was in Laleham Road at 11.55pm on Thursday (February 13) when he noticed suspicious activity at a parked vehicle.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested nearby and was later bailed until March 5. The screwdriver and a balaclava were seized and an investigation remains ongoing.

Inspector Julien Lawton said: “Whilst we continue to investigate this incident we would remind Thanet residents to take steps to ensure their vehicles are secure.

“Try to park your car in a well-lit area, ideally where it is covered by CCTV. Before you leave a car unattended, even for a short time, make sure it is locked by trying the doors directly.

“It is also important to remove any expensive items from your car and leave nothing on display, not even loose change.

“If you see anything suspicious or believe someone may have tried to steal from your car, report it to Kent Police by calling 101 (or 999 if a crime is in progress) or online via www.kent.police.uk.”
