There will be a change in the Margate skyline next month as Dreamland dismantles the Big Wheel for maintenance.

The wheel will undergo inspection and tune ups ready to be reinstalled in 2020.

The park will be open in December for the Winter Wonderland and Santa’s Grotto. A number of the rides will also still be in operation.

A Dreamland spokesperson said: “Dreamland’s Big Wheel is undergoing its scheduled maintenance over the winter period, which requires it to be temporarily dismantled. Don’t be alarmed if you notice something missing from the Margate skyline – the Big Wheel will be back!

“Essential maintenance is carried out on Dreamland’s rides throughout the year, with more in depth tune ups and inspections taking place during the quieter season. The Big Wheel will be in hibernation over the Christmas period and will return to action in 2020.

“The park will be open for Winterland Margate over the December holidays, with a selection of our vintage rides and the towering Dreamland Drop running for visitors to enjoy alongside our festive on park entertainment and premium Grotto Experience.”

Dreamland hosts its Winterland fun  on December 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, then daily 21st – 31st (excluding 25 December), 12pm-6pm (12pm-4pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day)

Visitors to Winterland Margate can expect dazzling fairy light walks, a winter market with festive food and drinks, yuletide crafts, free festive film screenings, Christmas trees, wreath making and more. A selection of seasonal rides – Double Decker, Gallopers, Speedway, Chair-O-Plane and Austin Cars – will be running in the park.

There will also be a special giant Snow Globe that guests can climb inside ( this incurs an extra fee).

Dogs will also be allowed on the park with their owners throughout the festive period. Find out more at

  1. Maybe while it’s being serviced they could put some lights up the spokes!! This must be the only Big wheel ever that doesn’t light up. Such an over engineered too expensive option. there were so many cheaper better options, no wonder Sands went skint after 3 months

    • There are certainly white pulsating lights on the west facing side of the wheel – perhaps you are on the wrong side ? !

  2. If only they kept all rides going throughout the Christmas period, they’d make more money! Then maintenance could happen in the early months of the new year. ?
