Part of the pavement along Northdown Road in Cliftonville has been closed off after the roof of the Fone Hut building was hit by lightning causing rubble to fall on the path.

The building was hit at around 4.45am today (October 18) causing the distinctive ‘pineapple’ on its roof to come crashing down.

Damage was also caused to the Nationwide building, which has been closed today.

A Kent Police spokepsperson said: “Kent Police were called at 4.46am to a report that debris had fallen from a building in Northdown Road following a suspected lightning strike.

“Officers attended the scene and building control officers were made aware.”

Thanet council, which is responsible for building control, has been contacted for further details.

  1. I have seen the state of some of those properties along Northdown Road and some of the roofs are dangerous. The last time the wind was blowing I was almost hit by flying slates that crashed down next to me as I passed by, along near Harold Road junction.
