Road in Cliftonville blocked off after police chase and hit and run

Police have closed off Sweyn Road in Cliftonville following a crash during a police pursuit.

Witnesses say a police motorbike rider was chasing a car when the vehicle collided with a van which was shunted into a parked car. A property was also damaged. One bystander was  injured.

The suspect fled the scene.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Kent Police officers attempted to stop a car in Sweyn Road, Cliftonville at around 11am.

“The vehicle did not stop and after a short pursuit was involved in a collision with a parked van, causing minor injuries.. This also caused damage to a building.

“Enquiries are ongoing to located the driver of the vehicle.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We were called to reports of a colliion shortly after 11am. Ambulance crews attended the scene and one patient was treated before being taken to William Harvey Hospital.”

Staff in a Thanet council waste truck saw the incident and sprung into action by blocking the road with their vehicle.

Cllr Ash Ashbee, Deputy Leader of Thanet District Council and Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said: “Our refuse crews have a demanding job, working in all weathers and providing a valued service so it’s fantastic when people take the time to thank them for their efforts.

“On this occasion they thought quickly on their feet; blocking the road, securing the vehicle to prevent it from causing further damage and assisting the police with their enquiries. Well done to all involved.”
