Margate’s heritage menswear store, Rat Race, is up for sale.

The shop, in The Parade, is the go-to store for Mods, Skinheads, Scooterists, Casuals and fans of fashions from the 60s-90s. It is a particular destination during Margate’s Mod Weekender, Soul Fest and Meltdown events.

The brand was founded by owner Laurence Clifton in 2014 whose vision for a British heritage menswear store had been carved out of many years of sourcing the best brands British subcultures had to offer.

Initially starting off with one shop on Margate’s High Street the business went on to occupy three adjoining units along the High Street. Last year the growth of trade prompted a move to The Parade.

Now Laurence is planning to go on to new challenges and is hoping to pass Rat Race to someone who will continue the business and take it further.

The store is known for stocking brands such as Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, Dr. Martens, Fila, Brutus and Gabicci.

The business is being marketed by Clarke and Crittenden for offers in the region of £45,000 plus stock. It consists of the 50m2 fully stocked retail shop with 30m2 store room and four bedroom flat above; 10 years remaining on the current lease; e-commerce website with all products listed with clear product photography; collection of over 20 well-known brands; large customer base throughout the UK; 30,000+ social media and mail list followers and all shop fittings including; rails, counter, mannequins, security systems, lighting, printers, computers, air conditioning, parcel packaging and photography equipment.

Laurence said: “ I’m looking forward to passing the business onto someone who will take it further and see it go from strength to strength.”
