Thug jailed for violent headbutt attack on woman in her Ramsgate home

Austin Francis has been jailed

A 55-year-old man who admitted headbutting a woman in an unprovoked violent fury in Ramsgate has been jailed for 21 months.

Austin Francis, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, August 24 after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm against a woman known to him.

On 26 June, the woman returned home in Ramsgate to find Francis waiting for her. Aware that Francis had been drinking, the victim tried to keep him calm but throughout the evening he threatened to smash up her property as well as hurt her.

In an attempt to take herself away from Francis’ aggressive behaviour,  the victim walked into another room  but was followed by Francis who started trying to argue with her, before head-butting her in the face.

The woman, aged in her 50s, ran outside and Austin started to chase her, but she made her way to her friend’s home to ask for help where the police were called.

As a result of the assault, the victim suffered injuries to her face which she is still receiving treatment for.

At court Francis was sentenced to 21 months in prison and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £130. He was also given a five-year restraining order not to contact the victim.

Investigating officer PC Nikki Rogers said: “Francis’ behaviour was aggressive, unprovoked and meant to intimidate the victim who showed great courage in trying to placate him before raising the alarm.

“There can be no excuses for his nasty behaviour, and I would encourage anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation or relationship to report it to someone and get help.

“Phone the police, or ask a trusted friend or relative to do it, as there is a range of support and information available. Nobody should feel they don’t have the option to walk away from domestic abuse.”
