Ageless Thanet: Helping isle people to set up in business

Ageless Thanet helped Sarah Gibbon with her venture

Over the last couple of years there has been an increase in the number of people over 50 looking to set up their own business.

Big Lottery Funded project Ageless Thanet is offering residents of Thanet, who are over the age of 50, the opportunity to complete their free Ageless Entrepreneurs Programme. The idea behind the programme is to equip you with the skills and knowledge to start your own business.

Sarah Gibbon is one person who has completed the business start-up course.

She said: “The course really got me motivated and believing in myself. We’ve covered all the basics about starting up your own business which was fantastic, but for me I’d always been held back by my lack of technology skills. After what I learned on the course, I’m now selling my jewellery over the internet.”

Sarah designs jewellery, accessories, and decorations using tiny seed beads. She says that her designs are inspired by the beautiful surroundings of Margate, where she moved to from South London to fulfil a life-long dream.

Natalie Glover, who manages the Ageless Entrepreneurs Course, said: It’s wonderful to be able to witness people growing in confidence and support each other through the course. We are often told that attending the course has enabled them to “follow their dreams” in starting their new business and we are delighted that we are able to support them in doing this.”

There is an Information Day on October 15, at Hereson Family and Community Centre in Ramsgate, where you can find out more about the course and discuss your business idea.

The course itself will be taking place in Birchington. If you would like to attend the Information Day, or find out more about the Ageless Entrepreneurs Course, please call 01843 855155.
