The mesmerising moves of Mambo have inspired Hollywood blockbusters and a generation of dance lovers for decades and now its devotees are making their way to Margate.
Embedded in western culture through the clubs of New York City to its interpretation on the silver screen with classics such as Dirty Dancing and West Side Story, Mambo is a mix of Latin styles originating from Cuba.
Now this dance phenomenon is ready to take Margate by storm with local production company Round in Circles bringing their own version, I Mambo Margate, which is choreographed to music created by isle rockabilly band, Bamboozle.
Community groups, including some members of the town’s lifeboat crew, will attend workshops to learn the dance before being filmed at a famous Margate location. Each sequence will then be used to create a video montage.
Anna Symes, artistic director of Round in Circles, said: “It’s hard not to love Mambo, if you Salsa, you Mambo and everyone loves a bit of Salsa, or has probably tried it – from young cool kids to people who are a bit older and are regularly into social dance. The music is really fun and we have devised a very special track – It’s going to be a fabulous surprise!
“Mambo was born in the 1950s and it’s very easy to dance. – it’s what they do in Dirty Dancing and West Side Story and who doesn’t love those films? I thought I could unite lots of different dance communities with it.”
Similar acclaimed projects include I Charleston Brighton and I Charleston Nashville but Anna says the town’s version will be hard to beat: “I Mambo Margate is next level competition. It sounds so good!”
