This year’s Dave Bambridge Memorial Cup tournament looks set to be a record-breaker

This year’s walking football tournament in memory of a former fireman and goalkeeper for Ramsgate and Margate football clubs is due to be held at Margate Football Club on May 13.

All proceeds from The Dave Bambridge Memorial Cup tournament, through entrance fees and a raffle, will go to Cancer Research UK and the Firefighters Charity.

The annual event, organised by walking football player Alan Austin, will also feature a barbecue, music and more attractions to be arranged.

Dave Bambridge was a local goalkeeper for Ramsgate FC and Margate FC and a firefighter. He sadly passed away aged just 35 in 2009 after a four-year battle with leukaemia.

Dave’s family agreed to the naming of a new trophy in his memory which is awarded to the winners of the event.

The event is free to attend.

This year it is hoped the game will be a world record breaker for the number of teams taking part in a one-day tournament. So far there are 32 teams signed up from all over the UK.

Margate FC has allowed free use of the grounds for the event which is being sponsored by Ramsgate-based Roe Stairs Ltd.

It will be played on Sunday, May 13 with kick off at noon.
