Garlinge is getting ready for a brand new weekly social afternoon aimed at Thanet’s over 65s.
Your Time at the Hussar will be officially launched at noon on Friday, November 3 and will take place each Friday afternoon from then on.
Your Time has been set up by the Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) – a project led by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau – in response to a study commissioned jointly by the British Red Cross and the Co-op in 2016, which revealed parts of Thanet were among the top 39 loneliest places to live in Britain.
Bringing people together
TCSP project coordinator Chris Scutt said: “The concept of Your Time is very simple: we want to bring people together. It cannot be emphasised enough how much of a positive impact a weekly afternoon aimed at promoting social inclusion can have on people’s lives. When the Hussar Hotel said we could hold Your Time on their premises, we knew it would be a winning formula”.
Charlotte Clarke, of the Hussar, said: “We are really delighted to be hosting Your Time. The Hussar has always been a focal point of the community, right back to Edwardian times when it boasted the largest tea, fruit and pleasure gardens in Thanet, as well as being a very popular hotel and bar.
“In keeping with this tradition as a place where people can meet and socialise, we are really looking forward to working with the Thanet Community Support Partnership on this new and exciting project”.
The Friday afternoons will include tea and coffee, and a traditional fish and chip lunch, at reasonable prices – and pool and darts absolutely free of charge. The launch will also feature Just Bowl – an indoor bowls project run by Kent County Council, and relaxing music.
Chris said:“We have been putting posters up in the local shops, pharmacies and GP surgeries in Garlinge and the surrounding area, and have been very pleasantly surprised by the warm enthusiasm which Your Time has been greeted with.
“We have been asked whether you have to be over 65 to come along, and the answer is ‘of course not!’. We’re looking forward to welcoming anyone who wants to come on board!”
