A month-long Festival of Migration kicks off in Margate tonight (October 26).
It opens with exhibition Welcome, at The Shop Front, 161 Northdown Road. The display explores the experiences of those uprooted by conflict and persecution over 70 years since the Second World War. From 1940s Greece to Syria today, the 30 striking pictures from Magnum photographers show the reasons why people are forced to flee, the challenges they face on their journeys to safety and what happens when they make it.
Other displays and events on offer include poetry at Landing Place on October 29, being held at Turner Contemporary, the tale of the Hartlepool Monkey being performed at the Theatre Royal on November 10 and 11 and Shipwrecks and Smugglers guided walk with artist Dan Thompson, connecting maritime history and migration in Margate. Meet outside Margate train station at 5pm on November 10.
