These photos show the discovery a World War Two air raid shelter in St Peter’s that had been hidden away for some 70 years.

It came to light again when it was recently unearthed due to building works in Crawford Road.

Works were halted until the Canterbury Archaeological Trust Ltd could survey the shelter. It is on the public air raid shelter list and is said to have housed 150 souls.

An unusual feature is that it’s half in the ground with a really thick curved roof protruding upwards. It was probably covered in grass as camouflage, most shelters are fully underground.
