The cause of a loud ‘bang’ off the Eastcliff in Ramsgate this morning (June 16) has been revealed.

A sea mine was detonated off the coast by the Royal Navy. The Southern Diving Unit team dealt with the device at around 8am.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed  the suspected wartime ‘sea mine’ was destroyed by the disposal team from Portsmouth.

Units from the team were spotted in Ramsgate at the end of last month but the Royal Navy has not yet confirmed whether the visit was connected to today’s disposal.
